Cathay Pacific traffic data for July 2022 reflected the favorable impact of additional changes to the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government’s travel restrictions and quarantine standards.
Cathay Pacific transported 219,746 passengers last month, a 306.2% increase over July 2021 but a 93.3% decline over the pre-pandemic average in July 2019. Revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs) climbed 348.4% every year but were down 89.4% compared to July 2019.
Passenger load factor climbed by 44.7 percentage points to 73.3%, while capacity increased by 74.6% every year but declined by 87.6% compared to July 2019 levels.
Ronald Lam, Chief Customer, and Commercial Officer said that we proceeded to increase passenger flight capacity in July in light of the Hong Kong SAR Government’s progressive changes to travel and quarantine restrictions. Capacity grew by 24% over June but remained low at 12.4% of pre-pandemic levels. The daily passenger volume grew to nearly 7,000. Meanwhile, the passenger load factor hit 73.3%, the highest level since the outbreak began.
For our clients transiting through the Hong Kong hub, we were able to increase the capacity run and gave greater connectivity options. The demand from the Chinese Mainland to Australia and the United States was especially high.

We also experienced high demand on our UK routes, particularly from students returning to Hong Kong. Because many of these flights were full, part of the student traffic was diverted to our other European gateways, including Amsterdam and Frankfurt.
Meanwhile, we were able to restore passenger service to Fuzhou, Nanjing, and Wuhan on the Chinese Mainland after adjusting for local capacity constraints.
Looking forward, the current changes to quarantine measures for travelers arriving in Hong Kong are projected to benefit both incoming traffic and leisure travel among Hong Kong residents.
Student travel to the United States and the United Kingdom is also projected to bring a significant boost to their travel industry in August and September.
However, until the constraints on our aircrew are eased, their ability to add more passenger flight capacity would be constrained.
